Can Infertility Be Attributed to Male Obesity?

While a body mass index of about 18.5 to 24.9 is regarded as normal among adults, body mass index of more than 25 is considered as overweight.

Obesity is defined as to having BMI of more than 30 while the morbid obesity is usually characterized by a body mass index of 40 or higher. On the other hand those men who are underweight can also suffer from reduced fertility.

In another study a connection between sperm health and obesity was also found. This separate study compared DNA fragmentation in sperm to male BMI. This study indicates that deteriorated sperm quality can increase to a great extent as body mass index passes 25 and is found to be in severe state in the person whose body mass index was more than 30. The fragmented sperm DNA is connected to reduced fertility and increased miscarriage risks.

Additionally, obesity can also create a number of effects on the male fertility like low sperm count and concentration, increased scrotal temperature and decreased libido. As such it is significant to maintain a good overall health to minimize the risk of male fertility problems to maintain a good reproductive health.

It is important to follow a healthy diet and to exercise regularly as these are significant steps in reducing the weight that can assist to achieve improve sperm health and healthy weight.
